The
Gospel According to Brian
(or The Damnation of Christ)
by Brian E Turner
This is not a specialist book. It is an attempt by a non-Christian to make sense of a story that doesn't appear to make sense. When the well known Episcopalian Bishop Spong, who has written many popular books, says that the The Passion narrative is a concoction invented by the gospel writers based on Old Testament stories and probably didn't happen then one is forced to wonder.
The author does not have academic qualifications (which is a blessing in a way). As a young man, seeking a philosophy, he discarded Christianity as a path to follow. In particular he could not accept the idea that a benevolent God would ask His only son to die a hideous death to save mankind from its sins as part of some holy plan.
When he decided, as part of a millennium project, to write a story about Jesus he came back to the gospels for the first time since his youth. Then he found the first problem. There was Jesus sitting in the garden at Gethsemane fully expecting a band of soldiers to come and arrest him and hand him over for execution. How did he get into this situation? Why did he do nothing about it? It was most perplexing. It took a deal of thought and research to find a rational explanation. The book lists and answers fifteen other questions While the results are speculative they provide answers to enigmas in what has been called 'the greatest story ever told.'
