Horowhenua Writers' Group

  Home page and contact details.

The Horowhenua Writers' Group is a group of writers who meet regularly in Levin for support and development. Aspiring writers are welcome to join. (See contact below.)

The group was formed in October 1982 by a group of friends who had in common their enjoyment of writing. Two founding and two very early members remain in the Group, together with many who have joined more recently. Members are drawn from the old Horowhenua area, before Otaki was made part of Kapiti. The location of our homes ranges from Otaki to Foxton. A car pool is run from Otaki to Levin, where the meetings are held.

Friendship and enjoyment of writing remain the main focus of the Group’s activities. Critiquing sessions and workshops to improve writing skills are held from time to time. Some members have sought and achieved publication, others are still trying, and yet others continue to write simply for pleasure.

The Group meets at Thompson House, Kent St, Levin, at 1.30 pm on the first Thursday of every month. A weekend group for writers in the work force or studying was tried but failed to sustain itself. The Group continues to welcome enquiries from younger writers, who are our future. We would like to accommodate their needs while remaining accessible to those older members who cannot drive at night. There are no membership fees apart from a $2 donation per meeting which covers tea, biscuits and venue hire.
