Seagull Press is the name given to the independent publishing of books written by Marion Rego.
    Marion
is a former Primary School teacher with a particular interest in developing children’s reading and writing skills. She has taught in New Zealand in Maori communities;in Britain ;in Africa ( Malawi and Zambia );and at the Correspondence School. Now retired, she remains in touch by helping struggling readers at her local school.
Marion has had a considerable body of work produced by Learning Media, Shortland, the Correspondence School, and the NSW School Magazine. Ten years ago she began to explore the possibility of publishing her own work in order to have control over the production  - using her own words, deciding on format, choosing illustrators and working co-operatively with them.
Having developed song-writing skills through working on Correspondence School broadcasts, she first produced two cassettes of children’s songs, the second with Radha Wardrop at UCA (Universal Children’s Audio). Again with UCA, and in response to the urging of teachers who had heard the relevant broadcast, came the production of  ‘abc’, the song, with variations, on cassette, and the words and illustrations in an accompanying book.
Next came ‘Grandad’s Attic’, a book Marion felt compelled to write from her own experience. Then ‘Know that Bird’, written because there was nothing on the market or in the library that was just right for the needs of her 6 – 10 year old grandchildren.
Subsequent books are aimed at shared reading with pre-schoolers, or children in school developing their early reading skills.
Marion will continue to produce new books in different genres but generally aimed at the pre-school to lower primary level.
