The WHITE Album Readings

Anthology from the 2008 Winter Readings

Winter Readings is an annual event in Wellington organised by HeadworX Publishers, Earl of Seacliff Art Workshop and Kwanzaa - the Afrikan Shop in conjunction with Wellington City Council and the City Gallery. The aim is to promote New Zealand poetry to the wider public through a series of lively readings taking place in the winter months in Wellington. Each year an anthology of the readers is produced and is edited/compiled by Mark Pirie and published by the Earl of Seacliff Art Workshop.

The first series of readings took place in 2003 at Bizy Bee's bookshop and were dedicated to the memory of Neil Rowe (1941-2003), the local writer and bookshop proprietor of BAM (Books Art Music). The second series in 2004 was titled "Tupelo Hotel" after the Doors album "Morrison Hotel" and took place at Tupelo Bar, Wellington, thanks to the generous support of the then bar manager James Humphreys. The third series in 2005 was titled "The Manuka Tree" and was held at St John's Church, Wellington, and sported an affectionate remake of U2's "The Joshua Tree".

This year's readings celebrate 10 years of HeadworX Publishers in Wellington, and are a tribute to The Beatles' White Album, with Beatles music played at the readings.   We will be announcing this year's winner of the Earl of Seacliff Poetry Prize: Will Leadbeater, who will come down from Auckland to read. This will be a rare chance to see Will Leadbeater read, one of our unsung poets who has been writing away for years.

Wine/juice and books for sale. Venue is the City Gallery Theatre, Civic Square, Wellington.
